- (SYR/Geffen)
The legendary New York rockers celebrate their 25th anniversary with one of their strongest albums in quite awhile. In some ways, it’s one of their most conventional releases: The songs are concise and almost poppy, with no extended noise jams (though there are still plenty of noisy bits). Nevertheless, it’s still very much Sonic Youth – the odd guitar tunings, the tension/release structure and loud/soft dynamics are all still there, but it’s all in more compact song form. And it’s the consistently strong quality of the songs that puts the album a cut above. 5/25/2006
