This California band takes a radically different approach on their third album, removing the guitar fuzz and distortion that garnered them comparisons to the Jesus & Mary Chain and delivering a raw, stripped-down set rooted in blues, country and gospel. For a group that hasn’t shown much affinity for roots music in the past, the songs are surprisingly well-written and convincingly performed. 8/3/2005
