The former frontman for Austin's Bad Livers has been hitting a creative
peak since moving to the Northwest a few years ago. His follow-up to
2001's excellent Things I Done Wrong is a wonderfully eclectic outing
that's rooted in bluegrass and old-timey music while also taking in
elements of rock, jazz and more. A couple of the songs recall Exile-era
Stones, and there's a fabulous cover of the Small Faces's "Ooh La La." The
stellar backing band includes guitarist Bill Frisell, violinist Darrol Anger and keyboardist Chuck Leavell, but it's Barnes's fearless sense of musical adventure that binds it all together. 8/25/2003
