- (Saddle Creek)
The fourth album from Omaha's Conor Oberst (aka Bright Eyes) shows the 22-year-old artist continuing to come into his own with an ambitious set of lo-fi orchestral folk-pop. While this lengthy release (clocking in at over 73 minutes) could've used some editing, the high points are many. The sound ranges from stark, country-tinged ballads and edgy orchestral pop to bursts of punk rage and experimental noise, while Oberst's literate songwriting connects time and again by laying bare honest, messy emotions. 7/15/2002
