Iris DeMent's first two albums of folk-country were intensely personal and spiritually charged affairs that drew from the deepest wells of ancient Appalachia while still sounding contemporary. Her new album is more musically and lyrically varied, stretching from quiet piano ballads to roadhouse rockers. It even includes some pointed political commentary, and that raw Arkansas twang carries a mighty moral force.
