Folk rocker M.C. Taylor has unveiled two new songs today under his Hiss Golden Messenger moniker, “Watching the Wires” and “Everybody Needs Somebody.” Both feature Amelia Meath of Sylvan Esso and Mountain Man on backing vocals. The former track is an upbeat soarer while “Everybody Needs Somebody” is a soulful straightforward yearner. Neither are attached to a forthcoming album. Taylor says this about the two songs:

“I wrote ‘Watching the Wires’ and ‘Everybody Needs Somebody’ in the basement of a house just outside of Portland, Maine, last summer. 2018 was a hard year — for myself and, as it turns out, most people that I know — and I was thinking a lot at that time about how to cope with what felt like an unnameable existential crisis: Run for the hills, or hug the nearest stranger? As it turns out, I’ve been doing a bit of both. Singing these songs has been helpful to me.”

Hiss Golden Messenger’s last album was November’s Virgo Fool. Listen to “Watching the Wires” and “Everybody Needs Somebody” and watch Hiss Golden Messenger’s KEXP in-studio performance from 2016 below.
