Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unrealeased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “London” by Mega Bog, from the 2017 album, Happy Together, via Nicey.

Mega Bog - London (MP3)Since 2009, Mega Bog have been making hyper-sexual, Aquarian tunes, probably due to a group swimming trip in the Pacific Northwest that led them to initially start jamming together. Since then, frontwoman Erin Birgy has relocated from Seattle to New York, spurring one of the many transitions that their second record, Happy Together, is based off of.

"London" is just one of the many experimental tracks from Happy Together, and opens with deep drums and a brassy hook. Birgy said in an interview about the track, “For the words, I was looking at a boa of photos an intimate and confusing friend had sent me, hanging on my wall. The photos are on the back cover of the Gone Banana EP. I just started singing along to the track, picture by picture.” Birgy’s vocals ooze over the synth as the track continues, creating free form poetry with a jazz-literate backing. It all comes to a futuristic crescendo of technologic noise, as she narrates each uncertain turn from photo to photo.

Erin Birgy and Mega Bog will be returning to Seattle to headline The Timbre Room on March 26th, with support from Hand Habits. Until then, look for more information and other tour dates on her Facebook page, and be sure to check out Mega Bog’s previous performance in the KEXP studio below.
