Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s selection, featured on The Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Double Infinity” by Springtime Carnivore from their 2016 album, Midnight Room, on Autumn Tone.

Springtime Carnivore - Double Infinity (MP3)Breakups aren't always bad. Well, that's not really true. They always are in some way, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to be learned or gained - especially when it's a stunning new album, like the latest from Springtime Carnivore. For LA songwriter Greta Morgan, Midnight Room isn't a dark place - it's where she explores the aftermath of a broken relationship with a captivating blend of dreamy pop melodies and wistful lyrics, buoyantly delivered through Greta Morgan's glorious voice. Nostalgia, not regret, is the name of the game, as songs like the opening title track and the LP's first single, "Face In The Moon", filter a glimmering '80s aesthetic with a touch of western twang. Today's featured song, “Double Infinity”, with its chorus of cascading synths, is as unapologetically New Wave as it is emotionally resolute: "You wanted forever, forever for free / If I gave you forever, what would you give to me?" Maybe things could have been different, Morgan might wonder ("After the afterglow, your two faces start to show / I've been waiting for the one I know"), but there's hardly more than hint of sadness inside Midnight Room. Now, don't go busting up your own relationship, but if you do, Greta Morgan's got your back.

Springtime Carnivore just performed an opening set for Fruit Bats at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle last week, but hopefully Greta Morgan will be back again soon. Fortunately for you, we captured a live set with her in the KEXP studio and will release that soon. In the meantime, keep up with her on her website and Facebook page, and be sure to check out the official video for "Face In The Moon" below.
