Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the day podcast subscription . This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is "Show Me the Stars", by Seattle's Lydia Ramsey, from her 2017 self-released debut record, Bandita.

Lydia Ramsey - Show Me The Stars (MP3)At the center of KEXP’s vision is musical community and contribution to the musical energies of Seattle and the greater Pacific Northwest. In a city full of local music, there are few people who personify this dream and identity better than Lydia Ramsey. From growing up in Indianola and learning guitar from her father to playing with local eclectic folk outfit St. Paul de Vence, booking at the Triple Door downtown, and shooting the video for her single “Ghosts” in Vantage, WA, Ramsey sinks deep to her roots. Her mentality towards support and contribution to the local community was what gave birth to Bandita, a collection of roots, delta blues, alt-country and honky tonk. The record is filled with marlingesque musical conversations, love, and longing.

On today's featured song, "Show Me the Stars", a viola cleanly cuts forward through an organic atmosphere of acoustics like a ship’s prow. As the song swings, the lyrics give the hope that no matter the context, “It doesn’t have to be this way.” Themes of wanting and disconnection echo throughout Bandita, and even more powerfully through the “Ghosts” video.

Ramsey was actively touring across the country at the beginning of March, finishing off with two killer LA shows. Upcoming, she has a one-off in Phoenix, before starting a June tour of Appalachia. Her future movements can be tracked on her website and Facebook page. Her work with St. Paul de Vence can similarly be found on their Facebook page. For now, here's the aforementioned video for "Ghosts", also from Bandita:
