This Labor Day weekend, the Northwest Film Forum presents the Seattle premiere of Miss Sharon Jones!, a documentary chronicling one of the most challenging years in the life of Sharon Jones (of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings).

The film was directed by two-time Academy Award-Winner Barbara Kopple (Harlan County USA, American Dream), who paints a loving portrayal of the beloved R&B artist. For years, Jones worked odd jobs -- from a corrections officer to a wedding singer -- while struggling to launch a music career. Teaming up with Brooklyn band The Dap-Kings was the magic she needed to breakthrough, becoming a favorite of KEXP way back in 2002 with their debut Dap Dippin' with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings. Over the next decade, they continued to grow in popularity. And then in 2014, on the eve of the release of their sixth studio album Give the People What They Want, Jones was diagnosed with bile duct cancer, which later became stage II pancreatic cancer, requiring liver surgery and chemotherapy. Kopple captures Jones' struggle with both the disease and her career in this triumphant tale.Miss Sharon Jones! opens this Friday, September 2nd and runs through Thursday, September 8th. Watch a trailer for the film below, and watch her and The Dap-Kings help KEXP celebrate our New Home at our April 2016 Grand Opening.
