This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Kid Who Stays in the Picture” by Hot Hot Heat from their 2016 self-titled, and final, album on Kaw-Liga Records.

Hot Hot Heat – Kid Who Stays in the Picture (MP3)

If you were one of the many people who listened to Hot Hot Heat incessantly in the early to mid 2000s, you’ll be thrilled to hear that they’ve returned to the electronic dance-punk magic of their early releases. Following the incredible success of their first two albums, 2002’s Make Up the Breakdown, and Elevator in 2005, the Vancouver, B.C., band slowly disappeared from the limelight. After roughly a decade of semi-obscurity, releasing a third and fourth (surprisingly good) album without much ado, they’ve returned to give us one last dose of nostalgia. “Kid Who Stays in the Picture”, the first track on their fifth and final album, does not disappoint. Featuring poppy synthesizers, analog keyboards, and Steve Bay’s unmistakable vocals, it’s more of the classic Hot Hot Heat you loved in their heyday.

Their last tour was in 2013, and they have no new shows planned nor will probably tour again, unless it's a reunion show some time in the future. But, you can find out more about Hot Hot Heat and listen to more music on their website and Facebook page. For now, watch the official video for “Kid Who Stays in the Picture” below.
