Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJ’s think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Starting Again” by Lisa Prank from her forthcoming album, Adult Teen, due June 24th on Father/Daughter Records.

Lisa Prank – Starting Again (MP3)

It's summertime and Seattle is starting to really heat up. Similarly, Lisa Prank is bringing the 90s-pop-punk-meets-Tacocat heat with her 2016 release, Adult Teen. It's been a couple years since the Seattle trendsetter's 2014 record, Crush on the World, where we first heard the TMI punk-laced bedroom recordings that the writer has funnily self-described as makeout music. This past weekend Prank (Robin Edwards) was out in Missoula, MT, working hard (and definitely playing hard) at the Camp Daze Music Fest 2k16 jamming alongside more pop punk crusaders like Seattle's Hoop and Arizona's Dogbreth, who are both opening for her album release show later this month.

Don't let her seemingly cute innocence fool you, "Starting Again" kicks off Adult Teen on a full-fledged foot staunch with classic pop punk-isms and doesn't hold back her emo-etched thoughts in "Luv is Dumb." Juxtaposing her wild style and quirks (e.g. her signature Prank crown), her stripped-down musical style is made up of Ramones-strumming powerchords, ironically deadpan vocals, and relatable songs about daily life. To boot, she effortlessly gets the job done using emphatic electric guitar and drum machine to pack her pungent punches.

Lisa Prank will reveal Adult Teen and June 24th, immediately followed by her free album release show on June 25 at Everyday Music. She'll perform before that, on June 11 at the Georgetown Carnival, and then later, on Labor Day weekend, at Bumbershoot. Look for more of her music and show updates on her Facebook, but first check out her recent guest appearance on the new Pony Time video for "Stop Talking":
