Veteran Tucson band Calexico return with their ninth album today titled Edge Of The Sun. KEXP Music Director Don Yates calls it "a beautifully crafted set of expansive folk-rock inflected with mariachi, synth-pop, cumbia and more. The album’s vibrant, colorful sound is fleshed out with help from an impressive supporting cast including Neko Case, Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), Band Of Horses’ Ben Bridwell, Devotchka’s Nick Urata and other notables."

Other highlights this week include the collaboration between Montreal-based bands Suuns and Jerusalem In My Heart (read an in-depth review of their release here on the KEXP Blog). Producer/DJ/record label owner Mike Simonetti and Silver Hands vocalist Elizabeth Wight combine forces as the duo Pale Blue. Their debut is "a moody, atmospheric blend of dream-pop with techno and ambient music, combining spacy synths and minimalist beats with Wight’s pristine vocals." Brooklyn band Ava Luna return with their third album, "a bit more polished and streamlined though no less eccentric set of quirky art-pop inflected with R&B, funk, doo wop, No Wave and more." San Francisco band POW! share their sophomore release of "dystopian synth-punk with buzzing synths, rumbling guitars, jittery rhythms and lyrics decrying the increasing gentrification of their hometown." And Tal National (a group with roots in Songhai, Fulani, Hausa, and Tuareg) share their latest release Zoy Zoy.
