Live Review: Another One Bites The Dust! Chop Suey's Last Hurrah 1/18/15

As the song goes, the times, they are a-changing. The face of Capitol Hill continues to shift and grow and morph in different ways. And while we aren't cynics here at KEXP, some of those shifts are very, very sad, the latest of which being the demise of one of our favorite little venues, Chop Suey. Chop Suey has given a home to Capitol Hill's DIY and indie rock scene for over 9 years, giving them a place to draw sizable crowds, hone their skills, and also just mess around. Thus, saying goodbye to it is no easy task.

Lucky for us, the best way to say goodbye isn't in sadness, but in celebration, and that's where Another One Bites The Dust! comes in. Boasting an impressive local lineup and brutally ambitious schedule, the night was maybe the best you've ever gotten out of ten bucks ever in your life. 4:00-5:00 - DJ Dave Hernandez 5:00-5:30 - Blood Drugs 5:45-6:15 - Childbirth 6:30-7:00 - Sashay 7:15-7:45 - Chastity Belt 8:00-8:30 - Deep Creep 8:45-9:15 - Kithkin 9:30-10:00 - Universe People 10:15-10:45 - Wimps 11:00-11:30 - PonyTime 12:00-1:00 - Tacocat

Yes, that is all one show, one venue, and one big farewell to Seattle's one and only love at 1325 E. Madison. KEXP photographer Victoria Holt brought a camera along and captured the entirety of the event in perfect style - that is, when she wasn't on stage with Pony Time screaming along to "Hey Girl!" with about 30 other people. All the glory and the grime has been retained for an honest and loving tribute to a truly great venue. The moments of the night mostly speak for themselves, so there isn't much need for a verbal introduction. Wimps, after playing the last shows at the Funhouse and the Comet Tavern (before its conversion) as well dressed up like the Grim Reaper. Universe People got a fantastic introduction from Chop's booker Jodi Ecklund as her favorite current band. Childbirth formed a Capitol Hill superground within a supergroup with Lisa Prank, Voltron-ing out into Know-It-All Dad for one cut about paternity featuring lyrics like "You're not my real dad, stop telling me how to be a better driver" - truly excellent stuff.

Elsewhere, bands felt the pains of loss a bit heavier. Julia Shapiro choked up a bit during Chastity Belt's last round of "Seattle Party" on the stage, and Kithkin dedicated a truly powerful rendition of "Ampersand" to the venue and all its people, each sharing a memory about sneaking to shows in underage or getting their first drink on the house there. And then, of course, no bands in Seattle could have closed out the party in the style and brilliance with which Pony Time and Tacocat did. Another One Bites The Dust! was a mixed bag of emotions, but one hell of a party all around. Check out the rest of our photos below.
