Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Midday Show with DJ Cheryl Waters, is “The Death of the Self Preservation Society” by Two Cow Garage from the 2013 album of the same name on Last Chance Records.

Two Cow Garage - The Death of the Self Preservation Society (MP3)

Noticing the drastic shifts in the music industry, Two Cow Garage got creative with the production of their newest album, The Death of the Self-Preservation Society. Amazingly, the entirety of the recording process (mastering, pressing, releasing, and promoting) was funded by fans via a campaign on indiegogo that raised $16,840, bringing in 40% more than they actually needed. It's a striking testament to the power of the fan-base, and another example of the die-hard D.I.Y. route that some of KEXP's favorite bands ambitiously traverse. Recently, they showed up to the KEXP studio for a Live Session, and brought with them their fusion of rock 'n' roll and country, showing all the merits of their work. Two Car Garage's "The Death of the Self Preservation Society," is a blusey, dance-worthy track. The introductory baseline's gripping, and holds up throughout the song. Gritty, raspy vocals and hoppy drum fills carry the weight of the song to the point of its breakdown, a bass-emphatic twelve seconds of groovy, back-breaking energy.

Two Cow Garage recently came through Seattle and stopped by KEXP for a rollicking live set. You can listen for yourself here and check back on our YouTube channel for video of the session soon. In the meantime, be sure to follow them on Facebook and Twitter to keep updated and maybe eventually contribute to their next album. For now, here's their indiegogo campaign video, which features samples from "The Death of the Self Preservation Society":
