Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song comes from Seattle Sub Pop band Rose Windows. "Native Dreams" hails from their LP The Sun Dogs, which hit shelves just last month.

Rose Windows - Native Dreams(MP3)

If we learned anything from their set at Capitol Hill Block Party this past weekend, it's that Rose Windows move in their own way. Their massive jam band sound pulls from some of the all-time greats- The Band, Jefferson Airplane, and The Doors just to name a few. But taking hints from modern prog bands, Chris Cheveyo has created a beastly powerful little group. With heavy flute, heavy guitars, heavy organ, and... pretty much just heavy everything, Rose Windows turn the amps to 11 and let the groove take control.

"Native Dreams" is the quintessential offering from The Sun Dogs. The intro is a flute extravaganza that ends in a cosmic guitar and organ duel for heaven's throne. Following that, Rabia Qazi's cool, sensuous vocals drive things forward for a moment's reprieve before the jam comes back in for another round. This brutal process repeats and then with Qazi's "slain at the altar", the mood changes to an experimental build into a completely different (albeit equally brutal and brilliant) guitar solo and jam-out. If you don't feel the sizzle on this delightful piece of acid rock, then you've gotten soft. Rose Windows know their history and Chris Cheveyo knows exactly what he wants, and with The Sun Dogs and "Native Dreams" especially, he nailed it.

Grab "Native Dreams" above and check out the rest of the LP The Sun Dogs, out now on Sub Pop Records. If you missed them at Capitol Hill Block Party, catch Rose Windows in Spokane on August 27. They head out on tour in support of The Sun Dogs this month.
