Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today’s song, featured on the Afternoon Show with Kevin Cole, is “Oblivion” by Seattle's Ever So Android from their 2013 self-released, self-titled EP.

Ever So Android - Oblivion (MP3)

Ever So Android's mixture of the distorted programming of Pretty Hate Machine-era Nine Inch Nails and the glitchier strands of the current EDM movement forms a tempestuous brand of electro-rock that's as dangerous as it is alluring. Now on their first tour behind their debut EP, guitarist Drew Murray's textures are feverish and piercing, but arranged in a way that his concentrated noise provides a sonic backdrop that can compete with singer Hope Simpson's Manson-esque rallying vocals. A slow-burning upward spiral of guitars and warped beats, "Oblivion" is as cataclysmic as its name implies. As the verses ramp up in intensity, Simpson's breathy, intense cadence wavers between a convicted growl and a raging wail, and by the song's explosive climax, it seems like it's only a matter of time until they're throwing keyboards into the audience.

Ever So Android plays their next show at the Tiger Bar in Portland on August 3rd. Get more information about that show here, and keep up with the band on their Facebook and website. Watch the duo tear through the EP track "40 Seconds" at Chop Suey below.
