" God made me funky "
I have no favorite musical styles and will try practically
anything. I'm not anti-pop or neo-avant, whatever appeals to me
viscerally, spiritually, or bootyfully is worth sharing with
whomever listens.
When I was a child I wished that I would be a DJ for a classical
station when I grew up. My favorite radio stations were WSDM, a
mostly jazz station with all women DJ's, and WXRT--both in Chicago.
I think the first rekkid I owned was 'The Peppermint Twist'
recorded live in the Peppermint Lounge back in Chicago. Earlier
today we went shopping and came back home with King Britt's
Adventures In Lo-Fi, War's the World is a Ghetto, Mercury Rev's
All Is Dream, ummmmm, ummmm, Cinematic Orchestra's Everyday, Max
Romeo's War Inna Babylon and some compilations on Soul Jazz.
The first concert I saw was a soul review featuring Dionne
Warwick, Gene Chandler, and The Temptations. The comedian was
Pigmeat Markham and the headliner was Bobby Blue Bland. The last
concert I saw was Talib Kweli, Gangs Starr, and the headliner was
Common.
My favorite live shows have been
Inezz Andrews, Albertina Walker, and Mavis Staples at The
Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church
Aaron Copland and The Chicago Symphony at Grant Park
The Jackson 5 at The International Amphitheater in Chicago
Aretha Franklin at Symphony Hall in Chicago
Peter Tosh and Black Uhuru at The Seattle Paramount
George Clinton at Bumbershoot 1990
The Grateful Dead's New Year Show at The Oakland Coliseum 1989-
1990
Bruce Springsteen at The Paramount in Portland
Public Enemy at The Seattle Paramount
and Prince at the Paramount
The worst show I ever saw was Sly and The Family Stone at Grant
Park Chicago in 1969. Sly didn't show and a riot truly went on!
My greatest fear is to have to move back and live in Chicago.
I love to eat and to kiss. Music is not my first second, or even 3rd biggest love.
When I'm down I pray. When I'm up I pray too.
Words to live by:
A shy ho is a broke ho.
Life is sweet and then you die.
The greatest of these is love!
Thanks for listening and saying so,
Love - or something very much like it..
