British punk trio Big Joanie formed in 2013 with the purpose of filling the void in the black feminist punk scene. They describe themselves as “like The Ronettes filtered through 80s DIY and riot grrrl with a sprinkling of dashikis.” Stephanie Phillips (guitar and vocals), Estella Adeyeri (bass guitar and vocals), and Chardine Taylor-Stone (drums and vocals) released two EPs, in 2014 and 2016, and finally dropped their full-length this year via Thurston Moore’s imprint Daydream Library.
“Fall Asleep” is the lead single off Sistahs and is a propulsive punk tune buoyed by a driving clap beat, a catchy singalong chorus, and a killer mid-song guitar riff. Watch the video for the song, directed by Andrew Northrop, below.
