Master Musicians of Jajouka

In-studio performance
The legendary Master Musicians of Jajouka are a group led by Bachir Attar from the village of Jajouka in the southern Rif Mountains of northern Morocco. They are hereditary musicians playing a traditional form of trance music estimated by some to be as much as 4000 years old. The woodwind Jajouka flute, or "lira," and double-reed "rhaita" (similar to an oboe) are accompanied by the goat-skinned "tebel" and "tarija" drums in extended sinuous performances considered to have healing powers.
