KEXP, in partnership with Public Radio Capitol (PRC), is now also broadcasting on 91.7FM in Tacoma, WA! The new signal will reach listeners down the I-5 corridor, all the way to Olympia. Listeners in the South Seattle area including West Seattle in many cases will be able to get better reception on 91.7 than they ever have on 90.3. This new service couldn't have happened without the support of our listeners, so we thank you!
On March 12, to celebrate the new frequency, Amanda Wilde broadcasted live from the Java Jive in Tacoma. During that broadcast she interviewed Tacoma garage rock legends, Girl Trouble. Listen to that interview.
How did KEXP begin broadcasting in Tacoma, and why?
HOW:
- Bates Technical College, which operated KBTC FM sold the station to PRC
- PRC has worked with other institutions for years to secure new channels for public radio
- PRC and KEXP have entered into an agreement to broadcast KEXP's signal from 91.7FM in Tacoma
WHY:
- To broadcast KEXP to listeners down the I-5 corridor
- To broadcast KEXP to listeners in parts of King County that aren't covered by 90.3
- To help KEXP work even more closely with artists in the musically-rich communities of Tacoma, Olympia and the South Puget Sound
